{September Reverie}

If you know me, you know that I love September. Just love it. Earlier this week, one foggy-bright morning (the combination is stunning), I sat in the rocking chair with my tea and just let the sunlight stream over me into the living room. I wanted to swim in it, dance in it, drink it all in. (However, I was still rather bleary-eyed, so I just rocked in it.) It was a good way to start the day.

Since then I've been wondering if these September days are my favorite days because of their beauty and the return of rhythm to our homes, or if I've been conditioned to love my birth month (as children tend to do).

With shy hesitation, September lands softly in demure shades of green,
burnt orange, and soothing yellows and blues.

I'm eager to start a fire, to wear sweaters and to drink (even more) tea. To curl up with a good book (right now I'm enjoying Not a Fan and All Creatures Great and Small) while the rain drums its soothing rhythm on the roof or while the slanted sunlight streams through the windows and the squirrels increase their activity (if that's even possible).

This morning we drove out toward the country for Aidan's flag football game. The vines and grasses, long and brown, entwine themselves charmingly around lichen covered split-rail fences. A hawk perches on a wire, peering patiently, expectantly into the field of grass. The rose hips dot the countryside with their festive oranges, and the cows keep munching and munching. It makes me come alive. And I wonder if it makes everyone else feel the same way.

Best I love September's yellow,
Morns of dew strung gossamer,
Thoughtful days without a stir,
Rooky clamours, brazen leaves,
Stubble dotted o'er with sheaves --
More than spring's bright uncontrol
Suit the autumn of my soul.

So I'm curious: Do you have a favorite month of the year? Does it happen to be your birth month?

Blessings to you, dear readers. Have a lovely, Septembery weekend. For my part, I will be celebrating my four-year-old niece and the first day of autumn!

  1. September is the best! (And I was born in November.) My favorite month in every state I've lived in.

    1. A kindred autumn spirit! I dream of visiting New England in the fall :).

  2. I love Sept, Oct and Nov! I love fall! I love the colors, the evening glow, crunchy leaves, the morning dew, the warm sun with cool fresh air. I could keep going! Oh, and I really like my birthday in October which I like to celebrate for a week. ;). Another great thing about fall is that there are so many fun ways to bring the outside beauty inside to decorate. I like to bring in pumpkins, leaves, twigs, gourds, pine cones and bugs. And the nice thing is when the season is over you just throw them back outside instead of storing all the house decorations till next fall. God's creations are the best decorations!

    1. I love the natural decorations, too, Anna! I've had my eye on the gourds . . . I'll have to grab some next time I'm at Bi-Zi farms!

  3. September is my fave- but not just because of my birthday. I think it's the beginning of the school year, the purchase of new school supplies, the beginning of football season, the intense colors, the cooler weather, the rain, the upcoming holidays... all of that is just exciting and interesting! In fact, I think September should be the start of the new year- not January. The Jewish New Year is in September- maybe I am Jewish!

    1. Happy (belated) birthday! I've always enjoyed sharing the month with you :). I totally agree that September should be our new year. At no other time do I feel quite that same sense of beginning.

  4. June's the best!

But September is a close second. Actually, I like the hot months best. So September is great when it stays hot.

(can you guess when I was born???)

Happy Birthday and enjoy those squirrels!

    1. You're helping my theory along quite nicely :o). It's staying pretty warm here during the afternoons, but there's certainly a nip in the air in the mornings and evenings. Yum! I'll be interested in hearing about your weather adventures in North Dakota!
