{If You Were a Book}
The other evening around the dinner table we got to talking about books. Specifically, I was curious to find out which books most represented each person. So I said to the kids, "If you could recommend one book for me to read, what would it be?" Their answers, although not terribly surprising, were fun.
Drew voted for the Harry Potter series. He's read and re-read them so many times that I had his choice figured out in a heartbeat. Bethie suggested the Nancy Drew books. You know what? I've never read one. Isn't that odd? She suggested the second one because it was so scary it made her fall off of her chair. Oh, goody. Aidan was recently very impressed by My Side of the Mountain, so he suggested that I read that one. Little Miss hemmed and hawed, trying to figure out which Ramona Quimby book to recommend. We finally landed on Ramona and Her Mother. Appropriate, no?
Jamie has been encouraging me to read To Kill a Mockingbird for months. Actually, it would be a re-read for me since I read it in high school. But my retention skills are . . . lacking. I plan to jump in soon. (In exchange, he will read A Tale of Two Cities. One of the finer stories every written. Also, it seemed nicer than forcing him to read Jane Eyre.) My mom is breathing down my neck to finally dive into Les Miserables already. Of course I'm looking forward to it, but it's one of those books that takes commitment. I have to pick the right time, you know? And my Dad. I'm guessing he'd suggest a Zane Grey or Louis L'Amour. Or maybe The Scarlet Pimpernel.
Land sakes, my book list is growing. How exciting.
Oh, and in case you're wondering, the book that I would recommend is Little Women. It's very me. Are you shocked?
So what's your book?

I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight, trying to narrow it down to one. I think I'll have to re-read some of my top contenders in order to decide :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I hear ya. Even after I landed on Little Women I thought, "Maybe I should have suggested such-and-such instead . . . ." Aren't we blessed to have so many wonderful stories in our lives?!
DeleteEvery couple of years or so, I go through the entire Anne of Green Gables series...L.M. Montgomery was a masterful storyteller!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Chanda! I've been itching to read the Emily books again, too :). Oh, and I have to add that I loved The Yearling! Such a beautiful story.
DeleteOooo, I love this game. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, for sure:).
ReplyDeleteI love having you play, Lisa! :) Have you read The Glass Castle? It's a pretty difficult read (in terms of subject matter), but it's so reminiscent of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
DeleteWest Virginia, lots of kids, poverty? I think I read it when one of my girls was a baby, so I'm having trouble remembering. I may have to reread. I just finished a REALLY good contemporary novel, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It has a funny name, but it is a sweet, sweet book about the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II. Also, I asked my girls their favorite books...Emilie said Guess How Much I Love You. Ella couldn't choose, but her top three are The Magic Tree House series, The BFG, and The Hobbit:).
DeleteI purchased Les Miserables months ago after the movie came out because a friend insisted I go see it. Well, I have this rule about reading the book first, so I promptly went online and purchased the book. It now sits on my bookshelf waiting for a time when I feel I can fully devote myself to it. I've made it a goal to have it read in 2013. I like how you stated it as being a big commitment. I've heard it takes an investment of about 100 pages before you feel like you have a grasp of all the characters, but after that it is addicting. That is part of my problem. I visualize myself obsessed with reading it and neglecting family, friends, housework, etc.... I've elected to wait until summer when our life pace slows a bit. You have motivated and encouraged me to get cracking! Blessings, Sharon
ReplyDeleteA Les Mis summer sounds like a great plan, Sharon! Maybe we can read it at the same time! :o)
